A sumptuous Dumpster Feast will be laid out at the BMW Edge at Federation Square, Melbourne, for the 2007 Sustainable Living Festival. In an exhibition curated by Kerrie-Dee Johns, I Need You As You Need Me, edible food recoverd from supermarket bins will be displayed and left to rot.

Dumpster Feast

Dumpster Feast (2004) was created in response to the quantity of edible food discarded by food retailers every day, whether for financial reasons, concern about public liability, or due to ignorance or apathy.

The food was collected over one day from only four different dumpsters. It was then prepared ready to eat, and displayed at the VCA Sculpture installation room. Invitations were sent out to participate in the launch of the “feast” but on arrival guests were denied the pleasure of eating the food. Instead, it stayed in the installation room for a full week, developing a soft fur of mould and an acrid stench. While this may seem contradictory to the project, it was imperative that the food be left to spoil to emphasise the disgrace of such waste on a comparatively minute scale.

A short video of the project compiles, the gleaning process, interviews with retailers, and the “feast” documentation of the food’s decay.

The artist and her housemates, colleagues and family continue to eat heartily from bins.

New Lovers' Concession Card

New Lovers' Concession Cards were issued in a performance on the opening night of the exhibition Conditions of Love curated by Elizabeth Presa and John Armstong. A service desk was set up to interview couples who presented themselves as “New Lovers”. Their photo was taken and cards printed if they met the eligibility criteria. The card can be presented to disgruntled bosses, neglected friends, or whenever the card holder is late, tired or distracted.

Bed Buddies

Ideas Catalogue: Issue Two

The second issue of the Ideas Catalogue was launched at the Sacha Design Showroom in October 2006 by The Honourable Brett Anthony Christian, Minister for Ideas.

Issue Two is a limited edition of 200 and contains ideas submitted by readers, both artists and non-artists.

Idea Cookies served at the launch gave enthusiasts quick ideas to carry out on the spot or when they got home, and sometimes contained one instruction that contributed to a larger group activitythat came together at a precise moment. Below is the “Plate Dance” which occurred with the concurrent ideas:

“At 7.35pm ask for two plastic plates from the sales desk lady”,

“At 7.35pm request Can Can music at the bar” and

“Ask any middle-aged lady with braids and a stripy-sleeved top to entertain the crowd”.

Founding Editor, Gabrielle de Vietri and The Honorable Brett Anthony Christian, Minister for Ideas, launch the second issue of the Ideas Catalogue.

Over the course of the evening, actors carried out one of the ideas submitted by designer, Tamarin Morley, as a free sample. The idea, “Posing as Charity Workers”, instructed the actors to approach people asking if they “had a minute” and proceed to tell them their initial impression of that person, any observations or assumptions they may have made about that person, or give them any advice they deem necessary. They were to be honest, but tactful, and give rather than collect information.

Gabrielle de Vietri's concept-driven practice includes sculptural, performative, photographic, moving-image, written and imagined works and is constructed to activate new social imaginaries through which personal and social shifts may occur. Through the combination of sincerity and humour, de Vietri proposes new ways of acting, interacting and transacting, creating new relationships and new realities.

Gabrielle de Vietri graduated with First Class Honours in a BFA (Hons) at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2005 after obtaining a Certificat d’Etudes en Arts Plastiques (2001-2003) at the Ecole Supérieure d’Art d’Aix in France. She currently lives and works in Melbourne is the founding editor of the annual publication Ideas Catalogue.
